Social Investment
TARGETS
Between 2022 and 2026, we will donate a minimum of £300,000 through our key partnership (75%) and our ad-hoc response fund (25%).
SOCIAL INVESTMENT UPDATES
Since 2018, we have donated £35,500 across 7 projects, spanning animal welfare causes - such as saving dogs from death row in Korea, supporting rehabilitation for injured koalas in Australia, providing medical equipment for chimps in Liberia - and supporting children in war zones with war Child and helping disadvantaged young people with Impetus Foundation.
TRANSITIONING TO MEDIK8 SOCIAL INVESTMENT
Since Medik8’s launch, we have donated small monthly amounts to Cancer Research, as well as made various smaller donations backing the volunteering/causes of Medik8 staff.
Since 2018, these donations took place under the banner of the Zipper Foundation, centered predominantly around animal welfare, child poverty and social injustices.
The leadership team would work from a fixed annual budget and select causes to support on an adhoc basis, as world events developed.
From Oct 2021, the “Zipper Foundation” was renamed “Medik8 Social Investment”.
With the launch of our new sustainability strategy in October 2022, we wanted to do more with the funds we have available - direct investments to a crusading cause to make a greater difference. We will also reserve ¼ of our funds to be available to respond to emergency situations or topical causes.
ZIPPER FOUNDATION
In 2018, following the passing of our beloved office dog, Zipper, who had been with us since the founding of the company, we decided to unite our charity efforts under the banner of the Zipper Foundation.
The Zipper Foundation was a charitable foundation with six separate animal welfare funds, dedicated to spreading Zipper's love around the world. The foundation was founded by a fixed amount of our company profits - a minimum of £15,000 per financial year.
Examples of some of the projects we supported: working with the Humane Society International to pay for food, supplies, medical and behavioural treatment for all of the 200 dogs who were saved from a meat farm near Seoul, South Korea, and helping Afghan children during the war via WarChild charity.
AN EXCITING NEW PARTNERSHIP IN THE WORKS
As per our Medik8 social investment ethos, we want to dedicate 75% of our £300,000 budget (up to 2025) to a crusading partnership that will ensure a positive impact on both the environment and communities.
Because of our founder’s deep passion for the sea - he is a PADI Rescue and Master Diver - we decided to focus our efforts on ocean conservation.
The ocean plays a very important role in carbon sequestration and climate regulation, as well as fostering biodiversity and supporting coastal communities. Therefore, an ocean conservation cause will be the thread which links the other pillars within our sustainability strategy.
We are very excited to announce the full details of this partnership by the end of 2022.
